How to read it
The router says one thing and the internet says another
That is the whole point. If your router answers in 5 ms with no loss while the outside targets are slow or silent, the equipment in your home is working and the problem is past it. If both are bad, the problem is likely on your side — your Wi-Fi, your cable, or the router itself.
My router looks worse than the internet
That happens, and it is usually not real. Many routers answer pings addressed to themselves with low priority — the CPU handles those, while traffic passing through is handled by dedicated hardware. So the router can look slow while forwarding everything perfectly. The app watches for this: when the near hop looks worse than something further away, it marks that reading “no data” instead of painting your network red.
One target looks much worse than the other
Also usually not your connection. Both targets leave through the same cable
and the same provider, so if the path were bad they would both be bad. One being
fine proves the shared path is fine — which means the other one is telling you
about itself. Google rate-limits pings to 8.8.8.8, for example.
The app uses the better of them for the overall verdict and explains the
difference.
Why the loss percentage sometimes shows as “3/47”
Because a percentage needs enough samples to mean anything. With ten samples, a single lost packet reads as 10% — a number that says “your connection is broken” when the truth was one blip. Until there are enough measurements, the app shows the raw count instead.
The data total does not match my provider’s
Three reasons, all shown in the app. It counts only while the app is running, so any time it was closed is missing — the app tells you what portion of the day it actually covered. It counts everything on the interface, including local traffic to a NAS or a printer that your provider never sees. And the system’s counters reset when the Mac restarts.
The Wi-Fi network name is blank
macOS treats a network name as location data. There is a button in the Wi-Fi section that asks for the permission. If it says “Location Services are off”, the switch is off for the whole machine, in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, and no app can ask until it is on.
Alerts
Off by default. When on, you get one notification when a real outage starts and one when it ends — never one per dropped packet. There is no sound, and it will not wake a sleeping Mac. You can set how long an outage has to last before it is worth telling you about.
What the app cannot do
- It does not measure bandwidth. It measures latency, packet loss and how much data is flowing — not how fast your line could go.
- It does not prove where a fault is. It gives you evidence, with the method written down, so you can argue from something better than a feeling.
- It cannot measure while it is closed. macOS does not run apps that are not running.
Sending a report to your provider
“Export report…” writes a plain text file with the period, the method, every interruption with its start time and duration, and a section stating plainly what the numbers do not prove. That last part is deliberate: a report that overreaches in one line loses credibility in all the others.
